INTRODUCTION The University of
Michigan’s Master of Urban Design Program is very pleased
to submit this report, Concepts for New Istanbul, Center
of Centers, to Istanbul Konut, Inc. The report provides
design, plan, and program concepts for an historic
opportunity: the creation of a new global city for Turkey
along the Black Sea.
New Istanbul’s goals are threefold:
1- To create a major engine for Turkey’s economy,
generating international investment and contributing to
the nation’s revenues.
2-To
reinforce Turkey as a leading nation regionally and
globally.
3-To alleviate problems in “old” Istanbul by
redistributing population, alleviating congestion, and
making the metropolitan region earth-quake ready.
The concepts are developed as a first step by project
stakeholders toward creating a New Istanbul that
ultimately will rival or surpass New York, London, and
Tokyo as a global hub of finance, arts, and culture – the
Center of Centers.
The members of the University of
Michigan’s Master of Urban Design Program are honored to
participate in this internationally important venture. We
look forward to New Istanbul’s realization.
